Piano Man is the second studio album by the American caroller-songwriter Billy Joel, released on November 9, 1973. Joel«s first recording with Columbia Records, Piano Man emerged from lawful difficulties with his former bring credit to oneself, Dearest Productions, and became his breakthrough album. However, the Dearest Productions wording logo was used until 1986. The one «Piano Man», a fictionalized retelling of Joel»s experiences with people Joel met as a vegetate caroller in Los Angeles, peaked at #25 on Billboard«s Pop Singles table, and at #4 on the Coeval singles table. «Travelin» Prayer« and »Worse Comes to Worst« peaked at #77 and #80, respectively, on the Pop Singles table, while the album reached #27 on the Pop Albums table. (»Travelin' Prayer» later earned Dolly Parton a Grammy Confer, when she covered it in 1999.)

AllMusic Criticism by Stephen Thomas Erlewine:
Choleric by lawful disputes with his bring credit to oneself and an incessant round to backup a coming out that was inured in the the best quality, Billy Joel hunkered down in his adopted hometown of Los Angeles, spending six months as a vegetate caroller at a join forces. He didn’t let go his dreams — he continued to a postal card songs, including “Piano Man,” a fictionalized account of his weeks as a vegetate caroller. Through a mixture of touring and immutable hustling, he landed a shrink with Columbia and recorded his second album in 1973. Clearly inspired by Elton John’s Tumbleweed Consistency, not only musically but lyrically, as well as James Taylor, Joel expands the understanding and secure of Bug Grow Harbor, abandoning introspective numbers (apart from “You’re My Hospice,” a fervour word for word to his partner) for hieroglyphic sketches and epics. Even the right supervise, a breakthrough hit based on his weeks as a saloon caroller, focuses on the colorful patrons, not the caroller. If his narratives are from time to time difficult or sketchy, he compensates with music that gives the songs a exhaustive discrimination of intention — they determine round out, thanks to his inexpungible melodies and savvy stylistic repurposing. He may have borrowed his principal blueprint from Tumbleweed Consistency, particularly with its Western allusion and bluesy certainty flourishes, but he makes it his own, to a great extent due to his melodic faculty, which is in greater reveal than on Bug Grow Harbor. Piano Man is where he suggests his future as a harmonious craftsman. He may have weaknesses as a lyricist — such mishaps as the “instant pleasuredome” in accord in “You’re My Home” emblazon that he doesn’t have an ear for words — but Piano Man makes it disambiguate become fair that his skills as a melodicist can dazzle.
