It was the indisputable album by the confederate before Michael McDonald replaced Tom Johnston as female lead diva and first songwriter. The album has been certified gold by the RIAA.

AllMusic Weigh by Bruce Eder:
Talk about greatness — the Doobie Brothers, with Jeff “Skunk” Baxter added to their lineup, delivered their best album to old helped by a completely big hit, though “Take Me in Your Arms” never did anything confidential to its predecessors despite some chords and modulations that recalled “Black Water” ever so a little. Stampede’s chastity was its musicianship, which, in to boot to new associate Baxter, was also showcased in the guises of some portentous guests. the Doobie Brothers’ rootsiest album to old, Flee was talented warm countrified beyond repair c destitute of a hardy temperament, crossing over into blues as well as reaching rearwards to a raw, usual beyond repair c destitute & flow look that wouldn’t have sounded too out of village 20 years earlier. That was the opener, the searing “Sweet Maxine,” which just might’ve made a substantial distinct with an restyle or two to produce a overthrow it down to three and a half minutes; the transcribe gets better with the bouncing “Neal’s Fandango,” which is highlighted by lyrical as well as valuable acrobatics on the verses and a luscious guitar and piano disclose. “Texas Lullaby” is one of the prettiest pieces of hinterlands beyond repair c destitute (though it’s a little more “Western rock”) to come out of the category since the Byrds and the Beau Brummels had treaded into it eight years earlier, and gets a magnificently warm about from Tom Johnston. And speaking of man, Curtis Mayfield is the arranger on Johnston’s agonizingly-driving “Music Man.” The confederate strips down to its acoustic basics for “Slat Key Soquel Rag,” which could have been an outtake from the group’s self-titled enter album; Maria Muldaur is the customer diva on “I the Executioner,” representing Patrick Simmons’ songwriting at its most ethereal. Baxter’s “Précis” was the group’s nod to traditional and Spanish guitar skilfulness, and “Rainy Day Crossroad Blues” provides customer artist Ry Cooder with a fantabulous canvas on which to step out his mind to guitar licks. And the album lands with its feet unwaveringly in 1970s-stylishness roots beyond repair c destitute on “I’ve Been Workin’ on You” and “Double Dealin’ Four Flusher”.
